This is the first time in Spain that a cross-sector alliance has been formed around environmental sustainability and the circular economy in which large companies join forces with startups to drive shared solutions.
PATIO Innovation & Startup Campus, a leading ecosystem for innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability, yesterday announced the 14 startups that will take part in its “Circular Economy” programme, launched in collaboration with its founding corporations: BMW Group España, Iberia, Inditex, L’Oréal Groupe, Mahou San Miguel, Moeve (formerly Cepsa) and Pascual. With the aim of promoting innovation, sustainability and collaboration to achieve a positive impact on society, this is the first time in our country that a cross-sector alliance has been formed around environmental sustainability and the circular economy in which large companies join forces with startups to drive shared solutions.
THESE ARE THE 14 SELECTED STARTUPS
Meep: its digital mobility solutions help companies comply with sustainability regulations, optimise mobility and reduce costs, while improving the employee experience.
CoCircular: has developed a SaaS technology (360º advisor) that gives its clients 100% digitalised, traceable circular waste management, ensuring compliance with the new Waste Law, which requires more than 70% of waste to be recovered; it currently achieves 91%.
Gravity Wave: a startup dedicated to cleaning plastic from the sea with 7,000 traditional fishermen in Greece, Italy, Spain and Egypt. Gravity Wave recycles the waste at various recycling plants and turns it into boards and raw material for different industries.
Lumio: the only sustainable energy platform that lets you install, consume and share renewable energy. Its platform brings all sustainable energy management together in one place, from installation to consumption and sharing of this energy among supply points that cannot install their own self-consumption system.
If Returns: has developed a platform to manage e-commerce returns efficiently. It offers retailers a cost-effective and sustainable approach, reducing costs and waste.
Hoop Carpool: the leading shared mobility company, optimising vehicle occupancy and saving users time, money and emissions. It connects people who commute to the same places every day so they can share a car.
REVIVACK CIRCULAR ECONOMY: promotes the Circular Economy by helping producers plan and manage the recovery of their end-of-life products through an agile, transparent and traceable system, delivering benefits for all the stakeholders involved.
Vaayu Tech: the world’s first automated software built to help retailers calculate and reduce their impact in real time. Using artificial intelligence and a certified methodology to visualise hotspots, Vaayu enables both businesses and their customers to make more sustainable decisions, improving resource efficiency and minimising environmental impact.
FINDS: a digital gateway to the global B2B off-price goods market. FINDS brings together the main players, best practices and the most advanced technology to streamline stock clearance operations and expand archive sales and surplus trading.
Hydrocarbon Engeneering: by hydrogenating CO2 or carbon-containing waste, based on the free radical of hydrogen extracted from water through a clean, emission-free catalytic thermolysis process, they produce net-zero fuels. The key to their project: it is affordable and scalable.
Miogas: helps families and businesses turn their organic waste locally into biogas and fertiliser. Users thus save on their gas/electricity bills and waste management costs while reducing their carbon footprint.
Spouted Beds Solutions: they transform complex plastic waste and capture CO2 with their advanced HECO technology, promoting the circular economy and reducing environmental impact.
AGROLINERA ASTUR: its technology enables traditional livestock farming communities to grow and retain their rural population without waste management undermining their sustainability. Agrolinera Astur digitalises the collection process so that slurry and whey can be transported economically to produce biomethane or be fed into other value chains.
TropicStream: develops a functional flour rich in prebiotic fibre from brewers’ spent grain using innovative biotechnological processing, creating healthy, sustainable and natural food ingredients. Its solution is a high-quality, food-grade ingredient that boosts the nutritional value of food products by increasing protein content and reducing crude fibre.
STARTUP SELECTION PROCESS
The startup selection process was carried out through a public open call, for which 392 startups registered. All of them went through an automatic scoring process, after which 188 moved on to an evaluation phase carried out by innovation and entrepreneurship experts, 37 reached a final phase of direct speed-dating with the seven corporations, and 14 startups were selected as finalists and participants in the programme.
The panel of evaluators who worked with PATIO Campus on this selection included renowned professionals such as Darío Mendez (El Tenedor, Seedrocket), Javier Megias (Plug & Play, RedIt Ventures), Orfeo Balboa (First Drop, NetMentora) and Natalia Ruiz (SC Net Zero Ventures).
BENEFITS FOR THE SELECTED STARTUPS
Within this programme, the selected startups will have the opportunity to build synergies with the corporations that launched the initiative, as they lead its design and define the sourcing, screening, reviewing, building and other phases of the programme.
“At PATIO Campus we are very proud to announce the 14 startups selected to join our “Circular Economy” programme. This programme, which we are launching in collaboration with international leaders such as BMW, Iberia, Inditex, L’Oréal, Mahou San Miguel, Moeve and Pascual, is a clear demonstration of our commitment to innovation, sustainability and building a more circular future. The chosen startups will have the opportunity to work directly with these large corporations, driving transformative solutions with a direct impact on our society,” says Borja Marinas, CEO of PATIO.
